Fun fact: Giant mastodons, wooly mammoths and ground sloths are believed to have been drawn here due to the salt lick deposited around the sulfur springs. So you can basically say the movie "Ice Age" was inspired by this place.
This place is pretty important when it comes to understanding the Ice Age period on North America. We were only here for 4 days but we explored A LOT.
We made it to Big Bone Lick and we're on the hunt for the buffalo but first, we nap.
We asked at the front desk and they told us the buffalo moved about 2 miles down the road to a safer environment for them and the campers. Thinking someone might have gotten hurt, she wouldn't say too much more.
Found this old mansion while exploring today. Tomorrow we'll go look for the buffalo.
WE FOUND THE BUFFALO!
Had to hike about 1/2 mile through the woods to an area that was fenced off. Then we ignored the signs, jumped the fence and made headlines on the 5 o'clock news... hahahaha just kidding. We didn't jump the fence. They were right there at the fence line, we got lucky.
We stopped at a small park when they had prehistoric animals and stuff about Lewis and Clark.
There was also a family graveyard at the campground -- Baker Family. And a root cellar.
The next day we took an hour drive to Ark Encounter in William Town, KY. The ark is a replica of Noah's Ark. Its dimensions are 510 feet long, 85 feet wide and 51 feet high. It opened in 2016 and took 4 years to build. If you get a chance to experience this Ark, you won't ever be disappointed.
You can see the Ark behind us here.
First level was where the water, cages and other animals were. Lots of sounds of animals but no actual animals were used.
This is a replica of the door the animals would have come through, as well as Noah and his family. Everything about these past few hours has been amazing. We learned so much and still have so many questions.
The next time you find yourself in KY, you have to check this place out.
Heading to TN in the morning.
